This section explains what a Brushless DC Motor is, its components, working principle, and applications.
Electric motors have been around since the early 19th century, driving everything from household appliances to industrial machinery. Conventionally, brushed DC motors were commonly used due to their simplicity and ease of control. These motors rely on brushes and a commutator to switch the direction of current and create rotational motion. However, this design comes with drawbacks such as wear and tear of the brushes, regular maintenance needs, and limited efficiency. Therefore, the quest for a more efficient and durable motor led to the development of the Brushless DC motor.
A Brushless DC motor, commonly referred to as a BLDC motor, is an electric motor that operates without the mechanical brushes and commutator found in conventional DC motors. Instead of using brushes to transfer electrical power to the rotor, BLDC motors utilize electronic commutation to achieve the same effect. The precise control offered by electronic commutation makes BLDC motors ideal for applications requiring high performance and reliability, such as electric vehicles, drones, and computer cooling fans etc.
This section showcases brief details about the basic components and working of the BLDC motor:
The stationary part of the motor, which houses the windings (coils of wire). When an electrical current passes through these windings, it creates an electromagnetic field.
The rotating part of the motor, which contains permanent magnets. The interaction between the magnetic fields of the rotor and stator generates torque, causing the rotor to spin.
This is an integral part of the motor that regulates the current flowing through the stator windings. By precisely controlling this current, the electronic controller ensures that the magnetic fields interact in a way that produces continuous rotation of the rotor.
Creating Magnetic Fields: When electricity flows through the stator windings, it generates a magnetic field. The direction and strength of this magnetic field can be controlled by adjusting the current.
Interaction of Magnetic Fields: The rotor, which has permanent magnets, is placed outside or inside the stator. The magnetic field generated by the stator interacts with the magnetic field of the rotor magnets. Here, the opposite magnetic poles attract and like poles repel, and this phenomenon is used to create rotation.
Rotation of the Rotor: The electronic controller sends current to the stator windings in a sequence. This creates a rotating magnetic field around the stator. As the magnetic field interacts, it pulls the rotor along with it, causing the rotor to spin. The electronic controller continuously changes the current in the stator windings to keep the magnetic field rotating.
This section showcases a few differences between BLDC motors and conventional DC motors:
Commutation Mechanism: BLDC motors employ electronic commutation. Controllers manage the timing and direction of current flow through the stator windings.
Maintenance & Durability: BLDC motors require minimal maintenance and have a longer lifespan due to the absence of brushes.
Efficiency & Performance: These motors are highly efficient due to reduced friction and energy loss (no brushes).
Commutation Mechanism: Brushed DC motors employ mechanical commutation. Brushes and a commutator switch the direction of current through the rotor windings.
Maintenance & Durability: Brushed motors require regular maintenance and need to have brushes replaced and the commutator cleaned.
Efficiency & Performance: These motors are less efficient due to increased friction and energy loss in the brushes.
